Aquaculture involves rearing aquatic animals under controlled conditions
to supplement natural supply, essentially an underwater equivalent
of agriculture. Worldwide there is a growing demand to substitute
wild harvest of fish species with aquaculture. One of the benefits
of aquaculture is that it can produce a product of consistent form
on a regular basis. The black-footed päua and the yellow-footed
päua are both being farmed commercially in New Zealand for
meat and pearls. This is a small but fast-growing market and research
is being conducted to enhance productivity.
