Fine scale management
Fine scale management of paua fisheries is seen as vital as it is
the only way to increase productivity / utilisation while at the
same time ensuring sustainability.
Fine
scale management could include a range of fisheries management tools
such as Reseeding, Translocation,
Fish downs, Variable
Size Limits, Spreading Catch
effort and improved Harvesting practices.
PICL
are involved in a project that is having a closer look at comparing
fine scale management options on Stewart Island. The project is
looking at reseeding vs closed areas vs increasing the minimum size
limit vs fishing as normal.
The
key to fine scale management is the collection of data at a fine
scale so that decisions can be made at the same scale fishing is
taking place. Having high resolution data also allows for fine scale
management practices to be quantified and monitored.
