The Paua Shell


These pictures show the range of beautiful colours that a Paua shell entails. The colours range from reds, to blues, to greens and all the colours in between. The outer shell is usually a duller colour because it is exposed to sea forces.



Harvesting

The first few pictures here are of the tubs that the Paua's lie in while being harvested. As you can see they start off in bags that hang in the water. The bags contain sometimes hundreds of tiny Paua. Slowly they become larger so they need to be alone at the bottom of the tubs. Sometimes from here the Paua are taken out into the ocean or they are just left in the tubs depending on where they are being farmed.

 
 




Reseedling

As you can see from the pictures below when Paua first grow they can be very small. They then grow at a very slow pace to sometimes being 20cm in diameter. The pictures below show the Paua at a seedling stage.
