Since the introduction of the QMS in 1996,
the TACC and landings of päua have varied for some areas.
Landings for the Northland/Auckland area remained well under
the TACC, declining to zero in 2003. For the period 1996 to
2003, in the Canterbury region landings have been both above
and below the TACC, finishing below the TACC in 2003. The
landings for the Fiordland region steadily increased from
1996 to 2003, reaching the TACC in 2003. Since 1999, the TACC
for Stewart Island has been lowered, to allow physical stocks
to rebuild. As a voluntary measure to help with this rebuilding,
quota holders have also not fished their entire quota. The
Southland/Otago area has also undergone a reduction in TACC
to combat declining stocks. The Nelson/Marlborough area is
another region in the process of TACC reductions and voluntary
quota lowering (by both commercial and recreational fishers)
to rebuild stocks.
