Päua are often in the news because
of poachers collecting them illegally. Frequently using illegal
diving gear, poachers gather large numbers of päua, many
of which are undersized, and sell them on the black market.
If päua continue to be removed in such
large numbers, the local stocks would be wiped out in a few
weeks. |

There are three species of päua
in New Zealand: the more abundant rainbow coloured black-footed
päua (Haliotis iris), the silver coloured yellow-footed
päua (Haliotis australis), and the‘virgin’
white-footed päua (Haliotis virginea). The whitefooted
päua is not fished commercially and the yellowfooted
päua is only fished in small quantities. |
